The Cathcart Circle Line (also known as Scotish City Commuter) is a route add-on for Train Sim World 2. This is the first Scottish route for TSW2, and will focus on Glasgow's suburban railway network, come with the BR Class 314 EMU.

About Cathcart Circle Line[]

Experience the hustle and bustle of a modern suburban network using classic electric traction, linking Glasgow's suburbs with the historic Glasgow Central hub, in Train Sim World 2: Cathcart Circle Line.

The Cathcart Circle Line and its branches date back to the late 1800s, the line between Glasgow and Cathcart via Mount Florida opened in 1866, with the circle being completed via Shawlands in 1894. Neilston station followed close behind, opening in 1903, with the branches between there and Newton acting as a through route for coal trains. While the days of freight are long gone, both branches remain a core part of the Strathclyde commuter network to this day.

It’s your job to take charge of the diverse services across this route; hurry commuters from the leafy suburbs and densely populated towns on the south bank of the River Clyde, up into the iconic Glasgow Central station.

Take control of the instantly recognisable “PEP” in the form of the BR Class 314 EMU, adorning ScotRail’s Saltire livery, and go to work on a variety of services. Shuttle between Glasgow, Newton and Neilston, and call at stations along the entirety of the Cathcart Circle in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. Take things for a turn by running services from Glasgow to Glasgow, and bring trains in and out of Shields depot and Neilston turnback siding.

Choose how you want to play; drive trains, ride around as a passenger, complete the route tasks, or simply pick a vantage point and watch the action unfold. Create your own experiences with the Scenario Planner and Livery Designer. Whatever you choose to do, there's lots to see and experience in Train Sim World 2: Cathcart Circle Line.

Route[]

This route features the Cathcart Circle Line, a circular commuter route which begins and terminates at Glasgow Central station. The route also features two branch lines, the Newton Branch and the Neilston Branch, both of which leave the Cathcart Circle near Cathcart station.

The "Cathcart Circle Line" is a general term given to the suburban railways lines between Glasgow and Newton/Neilston. The route was built in stagers between 1885 and 1894. Electric services started with Class 303 (so-called Blue Trains) EMUs in 1962. For many years the Class 314 EMU has been the primary traction on the route, but since 2016 Class 320, 380 and 385 EMUs have been introduced, with some Class 318 and Class 334 units as well. In Train Sim World 2, both branches and the circle are represented, with the Class 314 EMU in ScotRail Saltire livery (though it is livery designer compatible), allowing for a network-style not before seen in the game.)

Scenarios[]

  • Around and Around - Run the Glasgow Circle in each direction while performing passenger duties.
  • Extra Time - Run this match day service to accommodate for the fans travelling to the stadium
  • Divergent - Run an additional service from Neilston to Glasgow going via Newton to avoid a stuck train.
  • Collector - Starting at Shields Depot, run down the single track line to Cathcart before bringing the stuck train back to the Depot.
  • Dreich Day - Take this Glasgow to Neilston service through Mount Florida while keeping traction and timings vs the poor weather.
  • Pure Baltic - Poor weather on this Newton to Glasgow service means trains have bunched up along the line, affecting timings and causing poor signalling.

Misc/Trivia[]

  • Cathcart Circle Line was the first Scottish line to appear in Train Sim World.
  • It was also the first British, AC Electric route - with all routes previously being 3rd/4th Rail or Diesel.
  • The DLC was, at some point, renamed 'Scottish City Commuter', although it no longer seems to go by this.
  • The scenarios 'Driech Day' and 'Pure Baltic' are named incorrectly. "Driech" is a Scots' word for miserable weather, typically rain; while "Baltic" means (bitterly) cold. The scenario names are the wrong way round, with 'Driech Day' set in snow, and 'Pure Baltic' in rain.
  • Unlike reality, the timetable in Cathcart Circle Line does not contain any 6-car formations.
    • Two scenarios do, however;
      • 'Extra Time' depicts additional carriage services for a Hampden event - Scotland's national stadium is located near Mount Florida, and major events (Cup Finals, National Team and Musical) often see extra carriages and specials run by ScotRail.
      • 'Collector' starts the player in a 3-car unit, sent out to rescue a failed unit at Cathcart, as such becoming a 6-car empty stock move.
    • Other scenarios feature 6-Car units as AI services.
  • It is possible to break the player camera out-of-bounds, by sitting aboard a Railtour service as it leaves the map at Newton, in an exterior camera.
  • Cathcart Circle Line is, technically, the first debranded route in TSW - as it lacks the 'First' Group logo on the doors, which were still present in 2014, when the route is set.
  • Additionally, most Class 314s retained their SPT 'Carmine and Cream' livery until retirement in 2019 - although all units carry the Saltire in TSW.
  • On April 1st, 2024, a screenshot was published of Cathcart Circle, with the camera focus on a Class 380 stop marker at Queens Park, with a Class 380 gangway visible on a poster.
    • In-game, this poster is in the location of a route map.
