Since 1971, Amtrak has been the operator of long-distance passenger services in the United States. It operates services over 21,300 miles of track, of which Amtrak owns 730 miles. It was created in 1971 due to the fall in the number of passenger services in the United States in the 1960s.

Routes[]

  • NEC: New York - Part of the Northeast Corridor, a high speed link connecting Washington and Boston. This section covers the route from Newark, NJ to New Rochelle, NY via Penn Station in New York.
  • Boston Sprinter - Part of the Northeast Corridor, a high speed link connecting Washington and Boston. This section covers the route from Boston, MA to Providence, RI.
  • NEC: New York - Trenton - Part of the Northeast Corridor, a high speed link connecting Washington and Boston. This section covers the route from Penn Station in New York to Trenton, NJ.

Locomotives[]

  • ACS-64 - The ACS-64 is the standard Amtrak passenger locomotive on the Northeast Corridor, hauling services such as the Northeast Regional between Washington and Boston.
  • Amfleet Cab Car - Converted from Metroliner EMUs, the Amfleet Cab Cars are Non-Powered Control Units used on the Keystone Service for Amtrak.
  • SW1000R - A type of switching locomotive used by Amtrak for building consists in its yards such as at Sunnyside yard in New York City.
  • Acela - Amtrak Long-distance high-speed train, it is the fastest train in the United States reaching speeds up to 150 MPH.
